BSc in General Engineering

Basic Sciences

Basic Sciences—Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology—are fundamental to every branch of engineering, providing the essential knowledge and problem-solving skills that engineers need to develop innovative solutions. At Técnico, these disciplines have always been a core part of engineering education, and in the General Engineering cycle, they will remain central with a total of 60 ECTS dedicated to their study. However, recognizing that most students will become practicing engineers rather than researchers, a new teaching approach is being introduced. This model enhances the connection between science and engineering by integrating real-world applications, computational methods, interdisciplinary links, and opportunities for independent learning. By bridging disciplines and focusing on practical problem-solving, Técnico ensures that students gain a strong scientific foundation while developing the creative and analytical skills needed to thrive in engineering.

Ten units of Basic Sciences provide students with a solid understanding and command of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which form the intellectual basis for future engineers to creatively solve complex problems. These units feature an innovative bridging of disciplines and a significant contextualization of the engineering reality.
